Why Québec Joined Confederation
Some of the pros for Québec joining Confederation was;
1. One of the advantages for Confederation for Québec was that they really liked the idea of the Railway because, Québec would be able to use the Railway to be connected to the rest of Canada.
2. Another Reason the Québec wanted Confederation was, fear of American expansionism - confederation would enable the colonies to fight off invasion (there were rumblings about Manifest Destiny and the US was ticked off with Britain in the 1860s because of their support of the southern states during the Civil War)
3. Yet another advantage of Confederation was the changing trade situation - Britain had stopped giving the colonies preference, and the Reciprocity Treaty with the US was ended. The colonies had big tariffs on trading with each other. Confederation would end that.
Disadvantages: 1. One Disadvantage for Québec joining confederation was that they feared that they would lose their French language because all of the other colonys spoke English and Québec thought that they would get absorbed into the English language and culture.
2. Another disadvantage for Québec was the Rep by Pop rule; in 1867 the colony with the largest population was Ontario (then called Canada west). So this meant that Ontario would get the biggest say in the government. This worried Québec (Canada East) because they would have a smaller say in the government.
Besides George Étienne Cartier other fathers of Confederation represented Québec such as...
George Étienne Cartier
Jean-Charles Chapais
Alexander-Tilloch Galt
Hector Langevin
Thomas-Darcy McGee
Sir Étienne-Pascal Taché
